Senators Gray-Jackson, Revak were excused from a call of the Senate. Senators Olson, Reinbold, von Imhof were absent. The prayer was offered by the Chaplain, Rabbi Max Antman, Congregation Sukkat Shalom. Senator Hoffman moved and asked unanimous consent the prayer be spread. Without objection, it was so ordered. This week Jewish communities all around the world read a portion of the Hebrew bible entitled Emor, meaning “speak.” One might assume this title implies conversation, and yet the text is filled with prescriptive rules. About how one should care for one’s body, engage in the practice of marriage, interact with the deceased. Perhaps this portion of text should have been titled, “decree” or “announce” as that would have more accurately portrayed the narrative. For the word “speak” demands that someone is listening, and in addition, that that someone has the ability to respond. Democracies are built upon this sacred exchange, in which those in power listen to the concerns of their constituents and act in accordance with their needs. If, however, this practice of speaking becomes an exercise in decreeing, the relationship is shattered, and an entirely different form of government emerges. 2022-05-13 Senate Journal Page 2720 To be in sacred conversation requires that one listen to the voices of those most vulnerable. To the women at risk of losing agency over their bodies. The students who lack access to facilities that affirm their gender. The working- class folks without enough resources to support their children. In the days ahead, let us recommit to prioritizing their needs and freedoms. Because we do not live in a world of prescriptive rules and blind decrees. We live within a system that demands conversation. Thank You. Senator Kiehl led the Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance. Certification Senator Hughes moved and asked unanimous consent the journal for the one hundred fifteenth legislative day be approved as certified by the Secretary. Without objection, it was so ordered.
