Senator Costello was excused from a call of the Senate. Senator Shower was absent. The prayer was offered by the Chaplain, Pastor Tari Stage-Harvey, Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church. Senator Coghill moved and asked unanimous consent the prayer be spread. Without objection, it was so ordered. On this day in 1861, Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated as the 16th president so I offer some words from his speech as part of our prayer, “We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave, to every living heart and hearthstone, all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.” Six weeks later was the attack on Fort Sumter. 2020-03-04 Senate Journal Page 1930 So I ask us to reflect for a moment on the better angels of our nature, on the spirit of peace and grace that dwells in humanity. What does it mean to see each other as friends and not as enemies, to be bound together in one chorus? I invite you to breathe in the hope and the ugliness of what people can be and what we do to each other. Rise above the attacks, seek a better way, embrace the eternal love I refer to as God. Breathe into us patience, compassion, courage for justice, and most of all your grace. Amen. Senator Revak led the Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance. Certification Senator Hoffman moved and asked unanimous consent the journals for the forty-second and forty-third legislative days be approved as certified by the Secretary.
