Senators Hoffman, Wilson were excused from a call of the Senate. The prayer was offered by the Chaplain, Reverend Gordon Blue, Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. Senator Coghill moved and asked unanimous consent the prayer be spread. Without objection, it was so ordered. Psalm 58, a verse set for prayer this morning, Lord, Written by young David in his rebel days, perhaps, to the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” This is a tune we have lost, O Holy One. Lamentably. His lyric begins, “Do you rulers indeed speak justly? Do you judge people with equity?” “No,” he sings, “in your heart you devise injustice, And your hands mete out violence on the earth.” Perhaps there was a chorus here, or a bridge. David continues, “Even from birth the wicked go astray; From the womb they are wayward, spreading lies. Their venom like the venom of a snake, Like that of a cobra that has stopped its ears” Do you recall a solo, now, of David’s stringed lyre? 2020-02-03 Senate Journal Page 1630 Gracious one, this is the New International Version, and some disagree, calling out ‘gods’ or ‘politicians,’ instead of rulers. But all translations agree his verse takes clear aim at human corruption and lies, and strikes all the way, Lord, to the inevitable end. Save us, O Redeemer, from that grim-trodden path. Recall to us our pleasure to serve the people, with preference for the defenseless and the downtrodden, to bring joy and grace for the indigenous poor. Grant, O Dear One, a merciful way forward. O Wisdom, manifest the temperate justice learned of scripture and life, In the acts of these good women and men, here assembled, The Senators of our Great Land. Guide them to bring blessings to her many tribes, your people, Lord, in this time and to the ages of ages. Amen. Senator Wielechowski led the Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance. Certification Senator Coghill, Acting Majority Leader, moved and asked unanimous consent the journals for the eleventh through thirteenth legislative days be approved as certified by the Secretary. Without objection, it was so ordered.
