Representative Jackson had been excused from a call of the House today. Representative Thompson moved and asked unanimous consent that the following member be excused from a call of the House. There being no objection, the member was excused as noted: Representative Carpenter – from today to 8:00 a.m., March 9 The invocation was offered by the Chaplain, Pastor Tom Matthews of Douglas Island Bible Church. Representative Drummond moved and asked unanimous consent that the invocation be spread on the journal. There being no objection, it was so ordered. Respecting the fact that there are diverse religious beliefs represented here today, I appreciate the invitation to open your session with a word of prayer: Dear Lord: I thank you for each legislator sitting here today. I thank you that their constituents voted to put them into place. But with that position comes great responsibility as they not only represent their own beliefs and values, but also represent the 2020-03-04 House Journal Page 1794 will of the people who put them there. That's quite a load for them to carry. Help them to have wisdom as they make their decisions. Help them to be men and women of integrity. Help them to be guided by rules of justice and equity. Lord, I pray that the principles taught in Micah 6:8 would resonate in each representative here today: He has told you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you, But to do justice, to love kindness, And to walk humbly with your God? Finally, Lord, I am asking for your help for those in Tennessee going through the trauma of recovery from the tornadoes. People are hurting, beginning to sift through the remains of homes and businesses and are still looking for bodies in the aftermath of the storm. Help them to find all the bodies so the families and friends can have closure. Please, Lord, bring them the help they are going to need to recover. Use insurance and whatever federal or state programs there are to help them. Use religious organizations, friends, and relatives who would come alongside them. Give these victims the strength to deal with their loss and with the grief that some have in losing someone they love. In the name of Jesus Christ, I lift this prayer today. Amen. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Representative Story.
