Senator Olson was excused from a call of the Senate. Senator Kelly was absent. Senator MacKinnon, Acting Majority Leader, moved and asked unanimous consent Senator Kelly be excused from a call of the Senate today. Without objection, Senator Kelly was excused. The prayer was offered by the Chaplain, Student Rabbi Jeff Dreifus, Congregation Sukkat Shalom. Senator Hoffman moved and asked unanimous consent that the prayer be spread. Without objection, it was so ordered. The Jewish holiday of Passover, which we are celebrating this week, commemorates our ancestors' exodus from slavery. With the Egyptian army in close pursuit, the Israelites did not have enough time to bake bread for their journey. Instead of letting their dough rise, they hurriedly baked a flat, cracker-like bread called Matzah. To commemorate this, during Passover, Jews eat no leavened bread, eating only Matzah. Not only do we not eat bread, but traditionally we spend the days leading up to Passover cleaning our homes with a fine-tooth comb, ridding the house not only of bread, but of every last bread crumb. 2018-04-02 Senate Journal Page 2456 Some people say this custom is simply the Jewish version of spring cleaning, but in fact it represents something much deeper. Throughout the year, we not only accumulate physical crumbs, in our pantries and between our couch cushions. We also accumulate spiritual crumbs. We develop bad habits, we get distracted, we lose sight of what really matters. If we do it right, cleaning out our crumbs can be simply a physical manifestation of purifying our hearts and souls for the year ahead. As you continue the important work of this chamber, you may find a little spring cleaning goes a long way. There are always crumbs to be found, if only we take the time to look. Senator Egan led the Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance. Certification Senator MacKinnon, Acting Majority Leader, moved and asked unanimous consent that the journals for the seventy-third through seventy-sixth legislative days be approved as certified by the Secretary. Without objection, it was so ordered.
