Senator Stedman was absent. Senator Micciche moved and asked unanimous consent Senator Stedman be excused from a call of the Senate today. Without objection, Senator Stedman was excused. The prayer was offered by the Chaplain, Rabbi Mendy Greenburg, Mat-Su Jewish Center Chabad Lubavitch. Senator Hoffman moved and asked unanimous consent that the prayer be spread. Without objection, it was so ordered. Almighty G-d, I invoke your blessing today on this honorable body, the Alaska State Senate. Especially in these troubling times, when we are all watching again and again the very tragic mass murder committed in our public schools, by confused and misguided students. Almighty G-d, please invoke your blessings upon the Alaska State Senate, who are following the American tradition of four decades, established by U.S. Congress and presidents, to mark the birthday of the great spiritual leader, the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, on March 27th, 2018, as Education and Sharing Day U.S.A. here in the great state of Alaska. 2018-03-21 Senate Journal Page 2324 In so doing, the Senate expresses its unwavering stance on the idea which the Rebbe always taught; that education should not be limited to the acquisition of knowledge and preparation for a career, rather the educational system should pay more attention, indeed the main attention, to the building of character. As expressed in the universal values of the Seven Commandments which you, Almighty G-d, issued to Noah and his family after the great flood, which have often been cited as a guarantee of fundamental human rights; the foremost of which is not to commit murder. Almighty G-d, the members of the Senate, assembled here today, to fulfil one of your seven commandments, the commandment to govern by just laws. Please grant them the understanding that Alaska has the ability to be a role model in promoting morality, justice and good character. In doing so, they have the power to bring healing and peace to a struggling and broken America that is facing ongoing terrible tragedies in our schools. Almighty G-d please grant us the wisdom to empower our children with the message that one act of goodness and kindness can tip the scales to usher in an era of world peace. I would like to do my part, almighty G-d in reaching this goal, by doing this act of charity in front of this great body; demonstrating that even one small act of kindness can have a ripple effect, bringing about far reaching results for the benefit of many. May this great State of Alaska play a central role in achieving that awesome goal so powerfully stated in the pledge of allegiance: that the United States of America truly be "one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." 2018-03-21 Senate Journal Page 2325 And in the words of King David, Psalm 117, which corresponds to the Rebbe's birthdate anniversary; "Praise the Lord all nations, extol him all peoples." and let us all say, Amen. Senator Wilson led the Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance.
