Senators Dunleavy, Hoffman, Huggins, Stedman, Stevens were excused from a call of the Senate. Senators Fairclough, McGuire were absent. Without objection, it was so ordered. In Jewish tradition we study a work called the Talmud, which is a multifaceted work of law and lore and a record of the debates of the sages on a vast array of subjects impacting individuals and community. The most frequent debates recorded in the Talmud are between the schools of the great Rabbis Hillel and Shammai. In over 300 issues covering many important subjects, these great rabbis and their disciples parted ways. The Talmud in tractate Yevamot, comments about the nature of these debates between these two schools of thought. 2014-02-07 Senate Journal Page 1554 "Even though the House of Shammai and the House of Hillel often disagreed on important matters, this did not prevent them from marrying members of each other's circle." Why is it relevant for us? This is a reminder of the importance of civility in the context of serious disagreement. It is a teaching that warns against bitter factionalizing. It is a lesson in the importance of seeing ourselves as sharing a collective destiny despite different visions among us on what direction we should take. May this chamber be a place where principled disagreement can be expressed, but where civility and a sense of shared destiny is felt by all who endeavor on behalf of this great state. Senator French led the Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance. Certification Senator Meyer, Acting Majority Leader, moved and asked unanimous consent that the journals for the sixteenth and seventeenth legislative days be approved as certified by the Secretary. Without objection, it was so ordered.
