The prayer was offered by the Chaplain, The Reverend Murray Richmond. Senator Hoffman moved and asked unanimous consent that the prayer be spread. Without objection, it was so ordered. Lord, it is tempting to come in here and pray for big things: an end to racism, an end to war and violence, an end to world hunger. It is tempting to come to you with all the troubles of the world, and ask you to put it all into place, the way it should be. For centuries people have asked you to come down and clean things up for us. And for centuries, you seem to have resisted the temptation to intervene dramatically in our affairs, to put us out of our misery. Maybe we are asking for the wrong thing, when we pray for those big bad things to just go away at your command. Maybe we are like the guy who prayed and prayed to win the lottery, and then complained to you when he didn't win. And you had to tell him that you were willing to help, but that he has to at least buy a ticket. 2012-04-07 Senate Journal Page 2104 It is good to want an end to war, an end to racism, an end to hunger. But we cannot just come to you with a to-do list of big ticket items, and expect you to act like some cosmic cleaning lady who comes in to sweep everything clean for us. When your son came down to this earth he did not end all evil, but he did encourage us to look into our own hearts, and end the evils we find there. He did encourage us to look around, and end the evils we see around us. And today, as we sit on the verge of the most holy day for all Christendom, we are reminded that the work of ending evil is dangerous. It got your son killed. And there have been a stream of martyrs who followed him. But today, as we sit on the verge of the most holy day for all Christendom, we are reminded of hope. The message of Easter is that hope triumphs over all, even over death. And so we dare. We dare to try to end the evils we see before us, each of us in our own way. We dare to try to bring goodness and hope into this world. We dare, even in the complex and mundane work of crafting legislation, to try to make this a better world, as best we can. Everyone sitting in this room has bought a lottery ticket, so to speak. Every one of us here is not just asking you to make this a better world, but we are working ourselves to make it better. I pray you work through our efforts. When we tire in these last days of the session, remind us the hope that Easter brings; the hope of new life constantly springing out of perceived failures. Amen. 2012-04-07 Senate Journal Page 2105 Senator Wielechowski led the Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance.
