The invocation was offered by the Chaplain, the Reverend Simeon Johnson of St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church. Representative Gruenberg moved and asked unanimous consent that the invocation be spread on the journal. There being no objection, it was so ordered. When human beings gather in any kind of an organization, we tend to value people who can "get things done." But there are two kinds of personalities who are found in this category: the take charge and take no prisoners personality and the person who just gets things done with grace and ease. Each one of us has probably thought about someone who fits both molds by now. The Orthodox Church prizes the quiet gentle leader greatly. We teach that humility and cultivating an inner state of quiet prayer is the better of these two paths and that the person who cultivates stillness and humility will be the better leader and teacher. One of the ancient desert mothers, Amma Theodora (+490 A.D.) said, "A teacher ought to be a stranger to the desire for domination, vain-glory, and pride; one should not be able to fool him by flattery, nor blind him by gifts, nor conquer him by the stomach, nor dominate him by anger; but he should be patient, gentle, and humble as far as possible; he 2012-04-04 House Journal Page 2176 must be tested and without favoritism, full of concern, and a lover of souls." O Lord our God, who created all things, we ask you to come and bless this Chamber and those that work in it. Help them with wisdom and understanding as they do the work of the people. Keep them safe and grant them the strength to resist the temptation to become prideful. Rather, O Lord, we ask that you teach us all to remember that our words and actions have consequences and that you teach us to remain patient, humble, and gentle in our leadership. Amen. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Representative Seaton. CERTIFICATION OF THE JOURNAL Representative Austerman moved and asked unanimous consent that th the journal for the 78 legislative day be approved as certified by the Chief Clerk.
