Representatives Cissna and Neuman had been excused from a call of the House today. Representatives Edgmon and Stoltze were absent and their presence was noted later. The invocation was offered by the Chaplain, Becca Braun of Congregation Sukkat Shalom. Representative P. Wilson moved and asked unanimous consent that the invocation be spread on the journal. There being no objection, it was so ordered. With deepest respect for the beliefs and traditions of all Alaskans, I invite you to join me in reflection. There is a saying in Jewish liturgy: "Keep two truths in your pocket and take them out as fits the need." One is, "For my sake was the world created." The other, "I am dust and ashes." It is our challenge as humans to hold both truths within us, to find a balance between dust and divinity, between humility and self-respect. As this legislative session moves toward closure, may you appreciate the gravity of the task Alaskans have entrusted to you, the power you possess. At the same time, may you find 2011-04-05 House Journal Page 0744 the courage to question your own convictions, the forebearance to listen more than you speak, the humility to ask, "Is there another way of looking at this?" I would like to close with the Shehecheyanu, a Jewish prayer expressing gratitude for the gift of life. It is customarily said on special occasions such as births and weddings, Jewish holidays, prior to eating a fruit one has not tasted before, or upon seeing a friend one has not seen for the past 30 days. Amidst the clamor and tumult of politics, may we remain grateful for the simple gift of our ongoing existence, and may we view each day as an occasion for gratitude. Baruch atah, Adonai Eloheinu, Melech haolam, shehecheyanu v'kiy'manu v'higianu laz'man hazeh. Blessed art thou, ruling spirit of the universe, who has given us life, sustained us, and enabled us to reach this day. Amen. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Representative Thompson. CERTIFICATION OF THE JOURNAL Representative Austerman moved and asked unanimous consent that th the journal for the 77 legislative day be approved as certified by the Chief Clerk. There being no objection, it was so ordered.
