     If I had to sum up the Orthodox spiritual tradition in one                                                                 
     sentence or less, I would have to use the following line from                                                              
     St. Seraphim of Sarov (1759-1833):  "Acquire the spirit of                                                                 
     peace, and thousands around you will be saved."                                                                            
                                                                                                                                
      In that spirit, I will offer a prayer by St. Ephraim the Syrian                                                          
           (A.D. 306-373) that the Eastern Orthodox Church uses                                                                
     throughout Great Lent to help us acquire the spirit of peace:

     despair, lust of power, and idle talk.  But give rather the spirit
