Senator Hoffman, Acting Majority Leader, moved that the roll call be waived. Without objection, it was so ordered. The prayer was sung by the Chaplain, Don Burrell. Senator Olson moved and asked unanimous consent that the prayer be spread. Without objection, it was so ordered. First, our deepest condolences to the Menard family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during your time of mourning. And to the citizens of the great state of Alaska, I dedicate this song. As we journey through these troubling times, remember what a wonderful world we truly live in. "What A Wonderful World" I see trees of green, red roses too I see 'em bloom, for me and for you And I think to myself What a wonderful world. I see skies of blue, clouds of white Bright blessed days, dark sacred nights And I think to myself What a wonderful world 2009-03-03 Senate Journal Page 0432 The colors of a rainbow, so pretty in the sky Are also on the faces, of people going by I see friends shaking hands, sayin "How do you do?" They're really sayin', "I love you" I hear babies cry, I watch them grow They'll learn much more, than I'll ever know And I think to myself What a wonderful world. The Senate observed a moment of silence in remembrance of former Senator Curt Menard. Senator Wielechowski led the Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance. Communications The following letter dated March 2 was received stating: Dear Senator Stevens: By this letter, I submit my resignation from the Alaska State Senate effective at 5 p.m. today, March 2, 2009. I do so to accept the position of Senior Advisor to the Secretary of Interior for Alaskan Affairs. As you may imagine, there are a thousand thoughts and emotions that I'll have to sort through later to try and define this day. Right now the best summation simply is that it has been such a privilege to serve with you and all our colleagues, past and present, as a member of the Alaska State Senate. I look forward to working with legislators, the executive branch, and all other Alaskans as we build a stronger partnership between the Department of Interior and Alaska. Sincerely, /s/ Kim Elton Senate District B 2009-03-03 Senate Journal Page 0433 Standing Committee Reports SB 3 The Resources Committee considered SENATE BILL NO. 3 "An Act authorizing an Alaska regional development organization to use the Alaska Commercial Fisheries Entry Commission as an informational resource."
