Senator Davis was absent. Senator Ben Stevens moved and asked unanimous consent that Senator Davis be excused from a call of the Senate today through January 23. Without objection, Senator Davis was excused. The prayer was offered by the Chaplain, Pastor Thomas Dahl of Aldersgate United Methodist Church. Senator Hoffman moved and asked unanimous consent that the prayer be spread. Without objection, it was so ordered. O God, we often bow in prayer in intercession asking that You care for the weak, the lonely, the poor, the oppressed and powerless, the sick, the angry, the victims of awful circumstances, the dying and the grieving. And we do not forget them now. But, Gracious Lord, others enter our thoughts and we pray for them as well. Today, O Lord, we pray for the wealthy who own much and anticipate more; whose daily needs are met and who lay up stores against an uncertain future. We pray for them, O Lord, for their vulnerability is great. Having climbed so long, the fear of ending where they began is terrifying. We pray for them, O Lord, because they are vulnerable. 2004-01-21 Senate Journal Page 1970 And we pray for the powerful who control or manipulate destinies. Whose decisions are counted, and who hold in their hands the lives of multitudes. We pray for them, Lord, for their temptations are many. Having great decisions behind them, they are tempted to infallibility. Having achieved their power, they are angered by others seeking their own. Confident of their ability, they too often rely only on themselves. We pray for them, O Lord, because they are greatly tempted. We pray for them, O Lord, for the wealthy and for the powerful because they are, all of them, vulnerable and greatly tempted. Minister to them and to us by Your hand and Your word and through the lives of the poor and the powerless. Give us a new vision of life in its wholeness, that these may serve You well in this place. Amen. Senator Stedman led the Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance. Certification Senator Ben Stevens moved and asked unanimous consent that the journal for the ninth legislative day be approved as certified by the Secretary. Without objection, it was so ordered.
