Full Journal pdf2001-02-21 Senate Journal Page 0449 SENATE JOURNAL ALASKA STATE LEGISLATURE TWENTY-SECOND LEGISLATURE -- FIRST SESSION Juneau, Alaska Wednesday February 21, 2001 Forty-fifth Day Pursuant to adjournment the Senate was called to order by President Halford at 10:50 a.m. The roll showed thirteen members present. Senator Olson was excused from a call of the Senate. Senators Cowdery, Donley, Green, Kelly, Taylor, Ward were absent. The prayer was offered by the Chaplain, the Reverend Kathleen Wakefield of St. Brendan's Episcopal Church. Senator Hoffman moved and asked unanimous consent that the prayer be spread. Without objection, it was so ordered. Blessed are You, God of the universe. You have created us, and given us life. Blessed are You, God of the planet earth. You have set our world like a radiant jewel in the heavens, and filled it with action, beauty, suffering, struggle and hope. Blessed are You, God of this land, in all the people who live here, in all the lessons we have learned, in all that remains for us to do. (New Zealand Prayer Book) Senator Lincoln led the Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance. 2001-02-21 Senate Journal Page 0450 Certification Senator Leman moved and asked unanimous consent that the journal for the forty-fourth legislative day be approved as certified by the Secretary. Without objection, it was so ordered. Messages from the House Message dated February 20 was read, stating: The House of Representatives respectfully invites the Senate to a Joint Session of the Legislature at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 28, 2001 to hear Chief Justice Dana Fabe's State of the Judiciary Message. This is a change of date from the original scheduled Joint Session of February 23, 2001. Senator Leman moved and asked unanimous consent that the Senate accept the House invitation to change the date of the Joint Session. Without objection, it was so ordered. Without objection, the citation was adopted and referred to the Secretary for transmittal. Recess Senator Leman moved and asked unanimous consent that the Senate stand in recess to the Joint Session. Without objection, the Senate recessed at 10:58 a.m. 2001-02-21 Senate Journal Page 0455 After Recess Joint Session in the House Speaker Porter called the House to order and in accordance with Uniform Rule 51 turned the gavel over to President Halford, who called the Joint Session to order at 11:05 a.m. The purpose of the Joint Session was to hear an address by the Honorable Frank Murkowski, United States Senator. Senator Leman moved and asked unanimous consent that the roll call of the Senate be waived and all members be shown as present. Without objection, it was so ordered. Representative James moved and asked unanimous consent that the roll call of the House be waived and all members be shown as present. Without objection, it was so ordered. Representative Lisa Murkowski introduced the following members of Senator Murkowski's staff: Donna Pagano Murray, David Garman, Greg Renkes, Chuck Kleeschulte, Mark Reye, Brian Malnak and Kristin Freng. Representative Murkowski also introduced her mother, the Honorable Senator's wife, Nancy Murkowski. President Halford appointed Representative Kohring and Senator Elton to escort the Honorable Frank Murkowski to the Joint Session. The Senate Sergeant at Arms, Christian Blalock, announced Senator Murkowski's entrance to the House Chamber. The Honorable Frank Murkowski was escorted to the rostrum and introduced by President Halford. United States Senator Murkowski delivered his address. This address appears in Senate and House Joint Journal Supplement No. 4. 2001-02-21 Senate Journal Page 0456 Following his address, there was a question and answer period. Senator Murkowski received a standing ovation and was escorted from the chamber by Senator Elton and Representative Kohring. Senator Leman moved and asked unanimous consent that the Joint Session stand in adjournment. Without objection, President Halford adjourned the Joint Session at 12:15 p.m. After Recess In the Senate The Senate reconvened at 12:23 p.m. Unfinished Business Senator Pearce moved and asked unanimous consent to be excused from a call of the Senate on March 1, and March 7 through 9.
