Senators Austerman, Lincoln, Pearce, Taylor were excused from a call of the Senate. The prayer was offered by the Chaplain, Pastor Greg Clark of the Glacier Valley Baptist Church. Senator Hoffman moved and asked unanimous consent that the prayer be spread. Without objection, it was so ordered. Father, I want to thank You this morning for the opportunity that I have had this week, of being able to open these sessions in prayer. Help us to see that it is more than just an acknowledgment of Your existence, it is a belief that You hear and will answer. And we agree with the Psalmist, "Unless the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain." (Psalm 127:1) So we turn our eyes toward You this morning in dependence upon Your sovereign power, and thank You for Phillips Brooks who has reminded us, "Not to pray for easy lives, but pray to be stronger men (and women), not to pray for tasks equal to our powers, but to pray for powers equal to our tasks." With that in mind Lord, we pray that You will empower our senators with Your wisdom and with the ability to govern with truth and justice, and may You give Your special blessing upon their employments this day. Help us not to undertake 2001-02-02 Senate Journal Page 0254 anything that is contrary to Your will, and may our good works be crowned by You with success. We recognize that without You we can do nothing, therefore, let our eyes be continually lifted up toward Thee. God, bless our President, our Senators, our Congressmen and all those in authority; direct the public measures to our best interests, and to Your glory, and may each of us serve our generation according to Your will. Help us this weekend that we will be able to spend time with our families and time with You as we gather at our respective places of worship. May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the blessed Holy Spirit be with us all. Amen. Senator Leman led the Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance.
