The prayer was offered by the Chaplain, Pastor Leon Thompson of Chapel by the Lake. Senator Hoffman moved and asked unanimous consent that the prayer be spread. Without objection, it was so ordered. This is a new day for which we give thanks. You created this day and all the days of our lives. You created each one of us unique and special. We have been given abilities, talents and gifts. In this day may we use our God given abilities to help bring about good in our world, nation and state. Yesterday we celebrated the birth date of a great American, Martin Luther King, Jr. Let us learn from the example of persons who have come before us; people who worked for the good of our nation; people who attempted to bring honor to Your creation and bring about peace with justice for all persons. As the legislators begin their work this week, give them energy, imagination and love as they labor together. May we always rely upon Your wisdom and knowledge in the making of important decisions. May we be given patience and kindness 2237 1998-01-20 Senate Journal Page 2238 as we work with one another. May we be given courage to act with boldness allowing our conscience to guide our decisions. Guide the Senate this day in their work that they would find fulfillment in what they do. We pray all this to the One who created us and sustains us throughout all of life. Amen. Senator Wilken led the Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance.
