Senators Adams, Donley, Kelly, Parnell, Pearce, Phillips, Torgerson were absent. The prayer was offered by the Chaplain, Reverend Wayne Coggins of the Cornerstone Family Ministries. Senator Hoffman moved and asked unanimous consent that the prayer be spread. Without objection, it was so ordered. Heavenly Father, for our prayer today, let us consider the question: What is in a name? When visiting the Vietnam Memorial, it is a moving experience as a constantly changing sea of people quietly move along the wall of names, pausing, touching, speaking the name of their lost loved one. A flood of memories come to mind of cherished experiences, qualities and unique characteristics of their son or daughter, husband or friend. What is in a name? A lifetime of who we are is embodied in our name. So it is, when people speak our name. Beyond recalling our face, they remember who we are, our values, our contributions and some of our accomplishments. 233 1997-02-05 Senate Journal Page 0234 When we speak Your name, Lord, we do so with love and gratitude for all that it means to have You as our Heavenly Father. Our prayer today is that You would remind each of us that a good name is a priceless thing and that You would help us live our lives accordingly. Amen. Senator Duncan led the Senate in the pledge of allegiance.
