Representatives Croft, Kelly, Moses and Vezey had been previously excused from a call of the House today. Representatives Berkowitz, Brice, Elton, Grussendorf, Hanley, Kemplen, Kott, Kubina, Martin, Therriault and Williams were absent and their presence was noted later. The invocation was offered by the Chaplain, Father Peter Gorges of the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Representative Hudson moved and asked unanimous consent that the invocation be spread on the journal. There being no objection, it appears below: "Let us pray, Lord, how good it was to have so many young women in the building yesterday actively participating in 'Bring Your Daughter to Work Day.' Around town, their presence made us very much aware that we are only pilgrims on a journey. Now is our time to 'carry the ball,' to 'raise the flag,' to enact the legislation. Others have done the job before we got here and others will take our places after we are gone. Some of the young women who were here yesterday might very well be filling these seats in days to come. Now that they have been on location in this State Capitol Building and in the State Office Building next door, they might be a little bit more attentive to what we are doing today. 1998-04-24 House Journal Page 3236 You know, Lord, that we are giving it our best shot. But, yesterday's visitors have inspired us to look beyond ourselves and our constituents to what we want Alaska to be in the future. We want our state to be able to offer these young women and their peers the same freedom that we have. We want them to have the same enthusiasm and excitement that we have, that comes from being part of the Alaska experience. Inspire us today, to legislate things that will give their generation the fullness of life and freedom. Amen. " The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Representative Kookesh.
