Representatives Austerman, Barnes, Bunde, Dyson and Moses had been previously excused from a call of the House today. Representative Hanley was absent and his presence was noted later. The invocation was offered by the Chaplain, Reverend Paul Beran of the Resurrection Lutheran Church. Representative Brice moved and asked unanimous consent that the invocation be spread on the journal. There being no objection, it appears below: "Gracious Father, Your love and patience to us are more than we can fathom: the gift of life for a new day, the responsibilities of this House that summon our best, forgiveness in Jesus Christ for the many times we have fallen short, and the opportunities for good that beckon us now. Lord, oft-times we face subtle, relentless pressures. The interests of our people push upon us. We want to be responsible, respected, even liked. We desire to make the right decisions, yet so often the glass is clouded, the issues mixed, our vision so limited. We humbly ask of You, Holy Father, to grant us all that we need. Give us the wisdom and courage to separate greed from need, words from reality, numbers from the faces of real 1998-03-30 House Journal Page 2784 people which You have made. Help us that we might be Your faithful servants this day. In the name of He who came not to be served, but to serve, Jesus Christ. Amen." The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Representative Williams.
