Representatives Barnes and Hodgins had been previously excused from a call of the House today. Representative Hanley was absent and his presence was noted later. The invocation was offered by the Chaplain, Reverend Wayne Coggins of the Cornerstone Family Ministries. Representative Brice moved and asked unanimous consent that the invocation be spread on the journal. There being no objection, it appears below: "Our Heavenly Father, Today, we pause to thank You for the wonderful example that Jesus' life gives us in defining the essence of leadership. May we be reminded, Lord, that none of us were born leaders nor did we become leaders in a vacuum. We thank You for bringing into our lives mentors and encouragers, who, by their teaching, patience and example pointed us in the right direction and allowed us to develop the gifts and abilities we received from You. May we see clearly today, Lord, that true leadership is defined in service to others. And, like Jesus, when he washed the feet of his disciples, may we understand that the true mantle and symbol of greatness may be no more glamorous than a rumpled, damp towel and a basin of water. Amen." 1998-03-25 House Journal Page 2732 The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Representative Berkowitz.
