Senators Donley, Ellis, Phillips, Rieger were absent. The prayer was offered by the Chaplain, the Reverend Wayne Coggins of the Cornerstone Family Ministries. Senator Hoffman moved and asked unanimous consent that the prayer be spread. Without objection, it was so ordered. Thank You, Lord, for the privilege of serving the people of Alaska in our various roles of leadership. Thank You also for the example of leadership modeled by Jesus Christ, who gave us a real picture of the life of a leader instead of a sugar-coated one. Today, as it was when Jesus walked on Earth, it seems like so many folks have hidden agendas that make it hard to trust that a warm smile or handshake is a sincere gesture. Fact is, Lord, as a leader sometimes it's hard to have friends because it's so hard to trust. Jesus had some disciples jockeying for leadership positions; one waiting in the wings to betray Him and the scribes following His every move in hopes that He'd slip up in some way so they could discredit Him. Then, and now, the privilege of leadership has always had its price. 3233 1996-04-15 Senate Journal Page 3234 So, Lord, we ask You to help us not become jaded in our human relationships, that You'd give us friends whom we can trust and that You'd help us be that kind of friend in return. For this day, and for the challenges it brings, may we have Your help and the wisdom to lead well. Amen. Senator Duncan led the Senate in the pledge of allegiance. The presence of Senator Rieger was noted.
