Senators Lincoln, Zharoff were excused from a call of the Senate. The prayer was offered by the Chaplain, the Reverend Leon Thompson of the Chapel by the Lake Presbyterian Church. Senator Miller moved and asked unanimous consent that the prayers for March 16 and 17 be spread. Without objection, it was so ordered. March 16 Dear God, We come before You this morning calling upon Your presence before this body. There will be many challenges in this day and we need not walk it alone. Help us to rely upon Your power and strength to undergird and uphold us in the tasks at hand. Help us, in this day, to act with courage and wisdom. Where there is need to confront let us do it with a spirit of love and compassion. Where there is need to listen give us ears to hear and hearts to feel. Where there is need for vision give us eyes to see and the ability to look beyond our own immediate interests. Where there is need to speak give us courage to proclaim the truth. Where there is need for justice let us stand boldly. O God, may the representatives of the people of this land look toward the good of all and make the decisions that will improve the quality of life for the people whom they represent. 661 1995-03-17 Senate Journal Page 0662 We give thanks for the dedication of these representatives and thank you for raising them up in service. We thank You for the gift of time and talents they share. Surround us this day with Your presence and help us to continually call upon Your strength in all that we do. This prayer we give You in honor of all You have done for us, creator God. Amen. March 17 Dear God, As we begin this day we give thanks for life and the lives You've given us. Each of us have been given breath and movement, gifts and talents, abilities and tasks. This day may we step up to the challenges that come before us. When this day is complete may we look back upon what we have done and the way we have lived and be able to say with clear conscience - well done! We thank You that in the midst of all of life You are present. We can never escape and be detached from Your presence. We thank You that we can call upon You to walk in front of us to lead the way, walk beside us with support and encouragement, behind us to nudge and push when needed. Each of us have been blessed with special gifts and talents. May we use these abilities to be a blessing to others. Let us be encouraged by the strength and wisdom of others to help us along the way and not allow our pride to get in the way of helping others. There are many challenges and opportunities that stand before us in helping to build this great land we call Alaska. Guide this body with the tough decisions to be made this day and in the days that stand before us. 1995-03-17 Senate Journal Page 0663 Again we thank You for the service and commitment of these Senators. Guide them along the way. We pray this prayer to the One who created us and sustains us through all of life. Amen. Senator Kelly led the Senate in the pledge of allegiance.
