Senators Donley, Frank, Halford, Phillips, Rieger, Salo, Sharp, Zharoff were absent. The prayer was offered by the Chaplain, the Reverend Dale Sarles of Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church, Petersburg. Senator Taylor moved and asked unanimous consent that the prayer be spread. Without objection, it was so ordered. All provident God: ready or not You've brought us again to Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent. Whether we are Christians or not, seeing an ash- drawn cross on a forehead today can remind us of our common humanity and mortality. That is humbling, but also summons us to live a day at a time responsibly, creatively, thankful for the gift of life. Which brings to mind the New York City cabbie who proved to be one of Your messengers. After a passenger recited a long litany of troubles and complaints and finally uttered a few words of hope, the cabbie said, "Life is a blessing, pal. Aren't you glad you got to come in?" Well, Lord, the messengers You send to us may not always be the ones we expect, or even come when we expect them, but You do send them to us right on time! Thank You. Amen. Senator Taylor led the Senate in the pledge of allegiance. 433 1995-03-01 Senate Journal Page 0434 The presence of Senators Zharoff, Sharp was noted.
