The prayer was offered by the Chaplain, Father Herbert C. McMurtry of the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. Senator Lincoln moved and asked unanimous consent that the prayer be spread. Without objection, it was so ordered. O Almighty God by Your Grace we live in a state whose beauty, resources and opportunities are beyond our grasp and understanding. Deliver us we pray from the tyranny of trifles. May we give our best thought and attention to what is important, that we may accomplish the heavy work that faces us. May Your Holy Spirit be present with us that we may be spared from the indecision that wastes time, diminishes our peace, reduces our efficiency, and multiplies our troubles. In Thy Holy Name we pray. Amen. Senator Zharoff led the Senate in the pledge of allegiance. RECESS Senator Taylor moved and asked unanimous consent that the Senate stand in recess to the Joint Session at 8:00 p.m. Without objection, the Senate recessed at 11:59 a.m. AFTER RECESS JOINT SESSION IN THE HOUSE Speaker Barnes called the House to order and in accordance with Uniform Rule 51 turned the gavel over to President Halford at 7:55 p.m. The purpose of the Joint Session was to hear the Honorable Walter J. Hickel, Governor, deliver his State of the State address. Senator Taylor moved and asked unanimous consent that the roll call of the Senate be waived and all members be shown as present. Without objection, it was so ordered. Representative Phillips moved and asked unanimous consent that the roll call of the House be waived and all members be shown as present. Without objection, it was so ordered. President Halford introduced the First Lady of the State of Alaska, Ermalee Hickel. Hickel was escorted to the rostrum and introduced by President Halford. Governor Hickel delivered the State of the State address. This address appears in House and Senate Joint Journal Supplement No. 10. Following his address, the Governor received a standing ovation and was escorted from the chamber by Senator Kelly and Representative Foster. Senator Taylor moved and asked unanimous consent that the Joint Session stand in adjournment. Without objection, President Halford adjourned the Joint Session at 8:26 p.m. AFTER RECESS IN THE SENATE The Senate reconvened at 8:33 p.m. ANNOUNCEMENTS Announcements are at the end of the journal.
