SPECIAL ORDER OF BUSINESS The Chief Clerk was instructed to spread the following poem, read by Representative Foster, in honor of the 1993 Iditarod Sled Dog Race: "Iditarod '93" Each year Iditarod doggerel's Cranked out at a maddening pace. Maybe this year's the time To see how William might handle the rhyme Had he addressed the Iditarod race. T'is time to move thy dogs and all Swift 'long the Iditarod trace. Beware the Ides of March, For thou shall fail first to reach the Arch, If thou doth not keep thy winning pace. Though lead was oft' times traded. King gave dalliance no rein. First to Iditarod, And to silver ingot's fame, First to Yukon River, And to Anvik Feast's full fare; There to be sated with lobster, Shrimp and tenderloin rare. But Jonrowe pushed most hardly, Spurred at lated traveler's pace. On to yon coast, Under weather's fair face, Where night's candles burn so brightly, And jocular day stands tiptoe On the Misty mountains tops. 1993-03-17 House Journal Page 0695 First, to White Mountain; First, to safety Sound; And first to Cape Nome, Where the lights from yonder windows break, And Nome marketh the end of a swift run race. 'Above a star is dancing and under that I was born, So gallop apace you fire-footed dogs; On to Nome; On to another gaudy night; On to a Purse of Gold.' A rousing toast of tribute, 'To the winners of Iditarod '93', To the noble memory of Jeff King And his wing-footed dogs."
