Amendment No. 1 was offered by Representative Davidson: Page 1, line 1, following "Day" (title amendment): Delete "and" Insert "," 1993-02-10 House Journal Page 0295 HB 88 Page 1, line 2, following "Month" (title amendment): Insert "and Women in the Military Month" Page 1, line 10, after "cradle": Insert "is the hand that" Page 1, line 11: Insert new paragraphs to read: "(4) that, in addition to their role as wives and mothers of dedicated servicemen, U.S. service women serve nobly in every branch of U.S. military service and saw action during World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam, and Desert Storm; (5) The Women in Military Service Memorial to be constructed in Arlington National Cemetery to honor more than 1.8 million women who have served, or are serving, in the armed forces since the American Revolution, is an appropriate means of celebrating women's role in the defense of their country." Renumber remaining paragraphs accordingly. Page 2, after line 9: Insert a new section to read: "Sec. 44.12.080. WOMEN IN THE MILITARY MONTH. The month of May is established as Women in the Military Month to celebrate the noble service United States women have rendered to their country by putting defense of country first, thereby fulfilling their sacred obligation as defenders of this nation." Amendment No. 2 was offered by Representative Ulmer: Page 1, line 2, after "Month" (title amendment): Insert "; and relating to the prevention of child abuse and neglect in the family" Page 1, line 6, insert a new paragraph to read: "(2) Alaska children are in danger, as demonstrated by the fact that (a) Alaska has the worst rate of child death and teen violent death in the country; (b) a child dies from poverty every 53 minutes; (c) a child is abused or neglected every 13 seconds; (d) 38% of the homeless are single women and their children; and (e) in the last decade, child poverty grew by 26% while the GNP grew more than one-fourth." Renumber remaining paragraphs accordingly. Page 2, after line 9, insert a new bill section: "*Sec. 3. AS 47.05.010 is amended by adding a new paragraph to read: (14) prepare and implement a plan to prevent child abuse and neglect in the family." 1993-02-10 House Journal Page 0298 HB 88 Representative Ulmer moved and asked unanimous consent that Amendment No. 2 be adopted. Representative Bunde objected. Representative Bunde rose to a point of order regarding members reading from printed material on the floor. The Speaker stated the point was well taken and cautioned members not to read lengthy material from books.
