The invocation was offered by the Chaplain, Representative Fields. Representative Vance moved and asked unanimous consent that the invocation be spread on the journal. There being no objection, it was so ordered. With respect for people of all faiths, let us pray: The book of James reminds us, What good is it my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of them says to them, "go in peace, be warmed and filled" without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. Someone will say, 'you have faith and I have works.' Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. Sometimes, faith is tested, and that very test is a reminder: I will show you my faith by my works. How will we respond when our own faith is tested, how will we respond when we witness someone whose faith has been 2023-05-13 House Journal Page 1078 tested, and they embody the power of faith, showing us that faith by their works? As we're inspired by those who urge us to move toward justice, scripture gives us clear guidance: Lord, make me an instrument of your peace: where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Representative Fields. CERTIFICATION OF THE JOURNAL Representative Saddler moved and asked unanimous consent that the journal for the 116th legislative day be approved as certified by the Chief Clerk. There being no objection, it was so ordered. MESSAGES FROM THE GOVERNOR A letter dated May 12 was read stating that, in accordance with AS 39.05.080 and art.
