Tomorrow, May 15, by presidential proclamation, is National Police Officer’s Memorial Day. The first National Police Officer’s Memorial Day was proclaimed for May 15, 1963, by President John F. Kennedy. These excerpts from President Kennedy’s proclamation from 1963 ring true today: Whereas from the beginning of this Nation, law enforcement officers have played an important role in safeguarding the rights and freedoms which are guaranteed by the Constitution and in protecting the lives and property of our citizens; and Whereas it is important that our people know and understand the problems, duties, and responsibilities of their police departments and the necessity for cooperating with them in maintaining law and order; and 2021-05-14 Senate Journal Page 1052 Whereas it is fitting and proper that we express our gratitude for the dedicated service and courageous deeds of law enforcement officers and for the contributions they have made to the security and well-being of all our people; The demands on law enforcement are physically and emotionally taxing, combined with the stress that every day an officer leaving home for work is not sure of the dangers that officer may have to confront. But every day, 24 hours a day, officers go out on patrol, or work on sexual assault and violent crime investigations, and protect our fish and wildlife resources, braving the elements in Alaska to be there for Alaskans. On this day before National Police Officer’s Memorial Day, I want to thank all of the dedicated and courageous men and women that suit-up, and walk out that door in the morning, so that if we need them, they will be there for us. They include Village Public Safety Officers, City Police, Municipal Police, Troopers, Fish and Wildlife Officers, Coast Guard law enforcement, and many more. I would also like us to honor the memory of the 49 Alaska Police Officers that have died in the line of duty, “safeguarding the rights and freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution …” Please join me for Amazing Grace as a time of reflection and respect to honor these men and women. "Amazing Grace" was performed by Doug Gardner, bagpiper. Senator Revak led the Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance. 2021-05-14 Senate Journal Page 1053 Certification Senator Hughes moved and asked unanimous consent the journals for the one hundred fourteenth and one hundred fifteenth legislative days be approved as certified by the Secretary.
