Representatives Fields, LeDoux, Lincoln, and Shaw had been excused from a call of the House today. The invocation was offered by the Chaplain, Student Rabbi Jeff Dreifus of Congregation Sukkat Shalom. Representative Story moved and asked unanimous consent that the invocation be spread on the journal. There being no objection, it was so ordered. With the deepest respect for the religious beliefs of all Alaskans, I offer the following prayer: This month Jews observe the holiday of Passover which celebrates Moses leading the Israelites out from Egyptian slavery. To win their freedom Moses must stand up to the most powerful man in the empire, Pharaoh. Time and time again, Moses intercedes with Pharaoh. Time after time, Pharaoh refuses to let the people go. I like to imagine what Moses must have felt in those dark moments of rejection. Moses was not a confident man. He didn't like to speak in public. I imagine him going over his speech for Pharaoh again and again in his head. Each time he worked up the confidence to confront Pharaoh, he had to go back and tell his fellow Israelites that he failed. Many people, brave people, would 2019-04-05 House Journal Page 0460 have given up. But Moses persisted. He went to Pharaoh not once, not twice, not five, not seven, not nine times. Moses had nine chances to give in to say, I fought hard, but the other side was just too strong. If he had, the Israelites would have never made it to the promised land. May each of us find inspiration from Moses. In dark moments let us pray that we have the courage to persevere. Like Moses, may we never give up in the pursuit of what we know to be right. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Representative Claman. CERTIFICATION OF THE JOURNAL Representative Thompson moved and asked unanimous consent that the journal for the 79th and 80th legislative days be approved as certified by the Chief Clerk. There being no objection, it was so ordered. MESSAGES FROM THE GOVERNOR A letter dated April 4 was read stating that, in accordance with AS 39.05.080 and art.
