Representatives Fields, Kreiss- Tomkins, Lincoln, Neuman, Rasmussen, and Talerico had been excused from a call of the House today. The invocation was offered by the Chaplain, Student Rabbi Jeff Dreifus of Congregation Sukkat Shalom. Representative Shaw moved and asked unanimous consent that the invocation be spread on the journal. There being no objection, it was so ordered. With the deepest respect for the religious beliefs of all Alaskans, I offer the following prayer: This week Jewish communities all over the world begin reading the book of Leviticus, which describes the ritual animal sacrifices the ancient Israelites offered to God. It's often difficult to see how these ancient practices are relevant to our lives today, but we can learn from these traditions, which teach us about the power of sacrifice. Our ancestors, poor shepherds and farmers, believed that by sacrificing some of their scarce resources to God, animals from their flocks, or grain from their fields, they were serving God. It was the smoke rising from their altar that connected their earthy existence to God's holiness above. 2019-03-15 House Journal Page 0318 Thankfully today we no longer sacrifice animals, but by sacrificing our scarce resources—not only our money, but our time and our attention—on the people in our communities who need it most, we connect to something greater than ourselves. Our tradition teaches that it's by giving of ourselves that we make the biggest impact, that we bring holiness to the world. Let us take a moment to appreciate the sacrifices that Alaskans all across the state make every day to make their families and their communities stronger. And may each of us take a moment to look inward with a generous heart, in search of new ways to give of ourselves. Let us say together, Amen. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Representative Thompson. CERTIFICATION OF THE JOURNAL Representative Thompson moved and asked unanimous consent that the journal for the 58th and 59th legislative days be approved as certified by the Chief Clerk. There being no objection, it was so ordered. * * * * * Representative Johnston introduced Cassidy McCaslin, Guest Page, from Anchorage.
