Representatives Knopp, Neuman, Sullivan-Leonard, Talerico, and Thompson had been excused from a call of the House today. The invocation was offered by the Chaplain, Student Rabbi Jeff Dreifus of Congregation Sukkat Shalom. Representative Ortiz moved and asked unanimous consent that the invocation be spread on the journal. There being no objection, it was so ordered. With the deepest respect for the religious beliefs of all Alaskans, I offer the following prayer. Tonight Jews all over the world will begin celebrating Passover: gathering around the dinner table, recounting our ancestors' escape from Egyptian slavery over 3,000 years ago. However, our tradition insists that we tell this story not as ancient history, but as something that happened to us personally. In our Passover text we read, "The Egyptians treated us badly…They persecuted us…They imposed hard labor on us." Thankfully, no Alaskan Jews have ever been slaves. I doubt many have even been to Egypt. So why do we, year after year, insist on telling our children that we were slaves in Egypt? 2018-03-30 House Journal Page 2936 When we act as if the bitterness of slavery is something we experienced firsthand, when we tell ourselves that the suffering of others, suffering that we have been fortunate enough to avoid, when we tell our children that that is our suffering, we teach them how to walk in somebody else's shoes. When we look around the country and look around our state and we see suffering, may we learn from Passover how to spend time in someone else's shoes, and may we see their suffering as our own. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Representative Tarr. CERTIFICATION OF THE JOURNAL Representative Tuck moved and asked unanimous consent that the journal for the 73rd legislative day be approved as certified by the Chief Clerk. There being no objection, it was so ordered. * * * * * Representative Pruitt introduced his sons, Jacob and Bryce Pruitt, Guest Pages, from Anchorage.
