Representatives Hawker and Nageak had been excused from a call of the House today. Representative Kawasaki was absent and later excused. There was one vacancy. The invocation was offered by the Chaplain, Kayla Epstein, Wife of the late Representative Max Gruenberg. Representative Wilson moved and asked unanimous consent that the invocation be spread on the journal. There being no objection, it was so ordered. As most of you know this is where I met Max, giving the invocation on behalf of the Jewish Community. We always had a little disagreement: he said he came up and introduced himself on the first day, and I said it was on the second day. I never told him why I knew it was the second day, but I am going to tell you. It was because the Speaker's gavel came down, everyone was quiet, and this figure came running into the room with his arms full of books with his head down like he was trying to sneak in unnoticed and that was Max. When I used to give the invocation, I used to think about what you were going through. If I thought you needed inspiration, that is what I gave you. If I thought you had been up all night, I gave you a moment of rest in a meditation. Today my 2016-02-19 House Journal Page 1646 prayer is a little more personal, but I hope you will share it with me. It is a fearful thing to love what death can touch. A fearful thing to love, hope, dream: to be-to be, and oh! to lose. A thing for fools this, and a holy thing, a holy thing to love. For your life has lived in me, your laugh once lifted me, your word was a gift to me. To remember this brings a painful joy. 'Tis a human thing, love, a holy thing, to love what death has touched. May Adonai bring comfort to all who mourn and peace to those who are bereft. Amen. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Representative Johnson. CERTIFICATION OF THE JOURNAL Representative Millett moved and asked unanimous consent that the journal for the 30th and 31st legislative days, House Journal Supplement No. 3, Senate and House Joint Journal Supplement No. 12, and House and Senate Joint Journal Supplement No. 13 be approved as certified by the Chief Clerk. There being no objection, it was so ordered.
