As most of you know this is where I met Max, giving the
invocation on behalf of the Jewish Community. We always
had a little disagreement: he said he came up and introduced
himself on the first day, and I said it was on the second day. I
never told him why I knew it was the second day, but I am
going to tell you. It was because the Speaker's gavel came
down, everyone was quiet, and this figure came running into
the room with his arms full of books with his head down like
he was trying to sneak in unnoticed and that was Max.

When I used to give the invocation, I used to think about what
you were going through. If I thought you needed inspiration,
that is what I gave you. If I thought you had been up all night,
I gave you a moment of rest in a meditation. Today my

prayer is a little more personal, but I hope you will share it
    with me.

It is a fearful thing to love what death can touch.

A fearful thing to love, hope, dream: to be-to be, and oh! to
lose. A thing for fools this, and a holy thing, a holy thing to
love. For your life has lived in me, your laugh once lifted me,
your word was a gift to me. To remember this brings a
painful joy. 'Tis a human thing, love, a holy thing, to love
    what death has touched.

May Adonai bring comfort to all who mourn and peace to
