The prayer was offered by the Chaplain, Rabbi Dov Gartenberg of Congregation Sukkat Shalom. Senator Hoffman moved and asked unanimous consent that the prayer be spread. Without objection, it was so ordered. I share with you a classic story about two great rabbinic schools that perpetually disagreed on matters of Jewish law. The Talmud recounts this story. Rabbi Abba said in the name of Samuel: For three years there was a dispute between the school of Shammai and the school of Hillel. The ones asserting, "The law is according to our views," and the others asserting, "The law is according to our views." Then a divine voice went forth and said, "The utterances of the one and those of the other are both the words of the living God, but the law is according to the school of Hillel." Since both are the words of the living God, what entitled the school of Hillel to have the law fixed according to their rulings? Because they were kind and humble; they taught their own rulings as well as those of the school of Shammai. And even more, they taught the rulings of the school of Shammai before their own. (Babylonian Talmud Eruvin 13b) 2012-02-21 Senate Journal Page 1564 The text teaches that both schools were worthy in their opinions, but that the ultimate choice of the superior opinion met a standard of civility that allowed for a more thorough deliberation of the difficult choices in a controversy. May your deliberations be worthy and may you listen carefully to all sides when making the weighty decisions on behalf of the citizens of our great state. Thank You. Senator Paskvan led the Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance. Certification Senator Meyer moved and asked unanimous consent that the journals for the thirty-second through thirty-fifth legislative days, Senate Journal Supplement No. 5 and Senate and House Joint Journal Supplement No. 11 be approved as certified by the Secretary.
