Representative Herron had been excused from a call of the House today. The invocation was offered by the Chaplain, the Reverend Simeon Johnson of St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church. Representative P. Wilson moved and asked unanimous consent that the invocation be spread on the journal. There being no objection, it was so ordered. Back in the middle 1990s and again in the early 2000s, I served the Colorado State Senate as a member of the front desk staff. Like Alaska, Colorado has a limited amount of time that the legislature is allowed to be in session, and like Alaska, the last couple weeks in session can get very crazy. During this craziness, tempers get short, it's easy to rub each other the wrong way, and it's easy to forget that we are here, not to serve our agendas, but the greater good. It is important for everyone, staff, citizens, lobbyists, and elected officials to remember this and stay centered. How do we do this though? In the deserts of Egypt during the fourth century A.D. lived a monk we know as St. Anthony. He wrestled with the question of how one does not allow our temper or impatience to get the better of us in times of temptation. His advice is still good today. St. Anthony said that you start your day with prayer, then you sit down and do your work. When temptation arises, 2012-04-02 House Journal Page 2126 you stop, arise from your workstation, lift up your hands [and heart] to the Lord and say, "O Lord, help!" The Lord, who is merciful, will hear your prayer and help. Let us pray: O Lord our God, who created all things, we ask you to come and bless this legislative body. Help them with wisdom and understanding as they do the work of the people. Keep them safe, and grant them the strength to resist the temptation and to have the presence of mind to lift their heart to you in times of difficulty and remain in actions, as well as words, your servants. Amen. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Representative Thompson. CERTIFICATION OF THE JOURNAL Representative Austerman moved and asked unanimous consent that ththth the journal for the 74, 75, and 76 legislative days, House Journal Supplement No. 5, and House and Senate Joint Journal Supplement No. 15 be approved as certified by the Chief Clerk. There being no objection, it was so ordered. MESSAGES FROM THE GOVERNOR A letter dated and received March 31, 2012, was read stating that, in accordance with art.
