Representative Neuman had been excused from a call of the House today. Representative Johansen was absent and his presence was noted later. The invocation was offered by the Chaplain, Kayla Epstein of Congregation Sukkat Shalom. Representative Gruenberg moved and asked unanimous consent that the invocation be spread on the journal. There being no objection, it was so ordered. With deepest respect for the religious traditions of all Alaskans, I offer the following prayer: We live in a world filled with strife. People hate based on race, religion, place of origin, because of ancestry, and who knows what else. Even in our nation's capital the headlines tell us that this group won't listen to that group and vice versa. The work of the people is left undone. But here in Juneau, in this room and in this building, people do listen. They listen to each other regardless of political party, majority, minority, voter, lobbyist - people listen. We listen with interest for a voice from the heart which expresses itself by passion or logic or knowledge or experience. This is a place we can all be heard - and that leads beyond tolerance to understanding and caring. 2011-04-06 House Journal Page 0772 May it be your will, O Creator of Peace, that you lead us toward peace, guide our footsteps toward peace, and make us reach our desired destination for life, gladness, and peace. Amen. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Representative Stoltze.
