Representatives Crawford, Gardner, Neuman, and Salmon had been excused from a call of the House today. The invocation was offered by the Chaplain, Major Joe Huttenlocker of The Salvation Army. Representative Dahlstrom moved and asked unanimous consent that the invocation be spread on the journal. There being no objection, it was so ordered. Abraham Lincoln called for prayer on many occasions, but perhaps the most notable cry came on March 3, 1863, at the height of the Civil War when he asked the Senate to join him in repentance, fasting, and prayer for America. With these words Lincoln stirred the Senate to action: "We have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace, and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us; and have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self- sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us! It behooves 2007-02-19 House Journal Page 0256 us, then, to humble ourselves before the offended Power, to confess our national sins, and to pray for clemency and forgiveness." As we begin this new week we are reminded, O God, that you can save us from our troubles. As these men and women, members of the House of Representatives of this great state of Alaska, set about to serve the people who gave them this honor and distinction, we ask for your divine guidance upon them this day. Calm their spirits; guide their thoughts. May what they say be truth and what they decide be for the interest of those who have great need in our state. Thank you for each of them. Be with them. May it be so. Amen. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Representative Edgmon. CERTIFICATION OF THE JOURNAL Representative Samuels moved and asked unanimous consent that the stndrdth journal for the 31, 32, 33, and 34 legislative days be approved as certified by the Chief Clerk. There being no objection, it was so ordered.
