Senators Dyson, Hoffman, Olson were excused from a call of the Senate. Senators Cowdery, Therriault were absent. The prayer was offered by the Chaplain, Pastor Brian Ewing of Calvary Fellowship. Senator Bunde moved and asked unanimous consent that the prayer be spread. Without objection, it was so ordered. And Jesus sent messengers on ahead of Him and they went and entered a village of the Samaritans to make arrangements for Him. But they did not receive Him, …When His disciples James and John saw this, they said, "Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?" But He turned and rebuked them, and said, "You do not know what kind of spirit you are of; for the Son of Man did not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them." And they went on to another village. (Luke 9:52-56) Jesus, You came to seek and to save those who are lost. Forgive us who love You and in our zeal for what is right would call down fire to destroy those who oppose us. Give us Your heart. Give us an unwavering boldness to stand for what is unchangeable truth. But give us also grace and compassion for our opponents. You showed love for those who opposed You. You had compassion on a city that soon would be judged for rejecting You. You took no delight in their impending doom. 2006-03-09 Senate Journal Page 2406 We know Father that a people cannot reject Your ways for long without bringing disaster upon themselves. Our prayer to You today is for an extension. Give this city, this state, this nation an extension of Your mercy. Forestall judgment, O God, for one more day. Give us space to repent and turn to Your son, Jesus Christ. Amen. Senator Wagoner led the Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance.
