Senators Cowdery, Ellis, Elton, Ogan, Taylor, Wilken were excused from a call of the Senate. Senators Hoffman, Wagoner were absent. The seat from District R was vacant. The prayer was offered by the Chaplain, Pastor Robert Sherwood of the Church of the Nazarene. Senator Stevens moved and asked unanimous consent that the prayer be spread. Without objection, it was so ordered. The love of God for us and for our neighbor is not intoxication but act. As found in 1 Corinthians 13: "If I speak with the eloquence of men and of angels, but have no love, I become no more than blaring brass or crashing cymbal. If I have the gift of foretelling the future and hold in my mind not only all human knowledge but the very secrets of God, and if I also have that absolute faith which can move mountains, but have no love, I amount to nothing at all. If I dispose of all that I possess, yes, even if I give my own body to be burned, but have no love, I achieve precisely nothing. This love of which I speak is slow to lose patience -- it looks for a way of being constructive. It is not possessive; it is neither anxious to impress nor does it cherish inflated ideas of its own importance. 2003-02-14 Senate Journal Page 0182 Love has good manners and does not pursue selfish advantage. It is not touchy. It does not keep account of evil or gloat over the wickedness of other people. On the contrary, it shares the joy of those who live by the truth. Love knows no limit to its endurance, no end to its trust, no fading of its hope; it can outlast anything. Love never fails." - J.B. Phillips The love of God for you is not impulse but will, as found in the 43rd Sonnet of Sonnets from the Portuguese: How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. I love thee to the depth and breadth and height My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight For the ends of Being and ideal Grace. I love thee to the level of everyday's Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light. I love thee freely, as men strive for Right; I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise. I love thee with the passion put to use In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith. I love thee with a love I seemed to lose With my lost saints, -- I love thee with the breath, Smiles, tears, of all my life! -- and, if God choose, I shall but love thee better after death. Love these people in the midst of their busyness and put in them a heart of love, Father, through the sacrifice of Your Son. Be with our sons and our neighbors who are deploying at this time, and be with our prodigal children in far places. Amen. Senator Olson led the Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance. 2003-02-14 Senate Journal Page 0183 Certification Senator Stevens moved and asked unanimous consent that the journal for the twenty-third legislative day be approved as certified by the Secretary with the following correction: Page 172, under Senator Wagoner's excusal motion, change "February 14" to read "February 12."
