Senators Austerman and Pearce were excused from a call of the Senate. The prayer was offered by the Chaplain, Pastor Greg Clark of the Glacier Valley Baptist Church. Senator Hoffman moved and asked unanimous consent that the prayer be spread. Without objection, it was so ordered. Heavenly Father, it hardly seems possible that we have already begun the second month of this new year. The days seem to move quickly, but help us to remember that every day is a gift from You and ought to be used according to Your command. We ask You to forgive us our trespasses even as we forgive those who trespass against us. Help us to not be overcome by evil, but to overcome evil with good, and we pray that Your kingdom would come and Your will be done on earth, even as it is done in heaven. By Your sovereign grace, O Lord, You have established this nation, and You have given us the great privilege of living in this wonderful state of Alaska. We thank You for the leaders in our government and pray that You will help them as they seek to lead and legislate today and throughout the remainder of this year. You have commanded us to 2001-02-01 Senate Journal Page 0244 pray for those in authority and we see that not just as a command to obey, but a privilege to enjoy. Thus, we ask Your blessings on our senators. We pray that You will give them wisdom, patience, and health to carry out their several duties. Lord, give all of us hearts to deny ourselves and to be kind and generous to others, always remembering that it is more blessed to give than to receive. We pray that You will help us to be prayerful about everything, thankful for anything, and anxious about nothing. "Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy, to God our Savior, who alone is wise, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and forever." (Jude 24-25) Amen. Senator Kelly led the Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance.
