The roll showed nine members present. Senators Adams, Donley, Halford, Hoffman, Pete Kelly, Leman, Lincoln, Miller, Pearce, Ward, Wilken were excused from a call of the Senate. The prayer was offered by the Chaplain, Pastor Wayne Coggins of the Cornerstone Family Ministries. Senator Parnell moved and asked unanimous consent that the prayer be spread. Without objection, it was so ordered. Heavenly Father, it has been said that kindness is love with its work boots on. My prayer today has to do with this homespun definition of kindness that my wife and I observed a few years ago as we were driving down to Juneau. It was one of those snowy and blowy days with icy-slick roads that made you hope a few extra guardian angels were on duty. Rounding a bend near Tok, we came upon a caravan of cars pulled over as work was being done to dig out a car that had spun off into the ditch. Nobody was injured so it was just a matter of digging out enough snow to get under the little car with a tow chain so it could be winched back up on the road. Someone dressed in Carharts and Bunny Boots and covered with snow finally emerged from having attached the chain. No, it wasnt a tow truck driver summoned from Tok...nor was it an old sourdough who happened along with the right 613 1999-03-19 Senate Journal Page 0614 attire and equipment to do the job. The man digging while the rest of the folks watched was none other than former Representative Mark Hanley and the car was one driven by one of his staff. Needless to say, I was impressed that the Honorable Representative himself was willing to don his work clothes, dig in and tackle the job at hand. So, with that in mind, my prayer today, Lord, is that each one of us will never esteem ourselves too highly ranked among men that we arent willing to put on our own version of Carharts and Bunny Boots, roll up our sleeves and get the job done. I pray this in the Name of the One who modeled servant leadership for us all by taking a basin of water, a towel, and washing his disciples feet. In Jesus Name, Amen. Senator Torgerson led the Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance.
