Senator Ward was excused from a call of the Senate. Senators Donley, Hoffman, Pete Kelly, Parnell, Taylor were absent. The prayer was offered by the Chaplain, Senator Lincoln. Senator Adams moved and asked unanimous consent that the prayer be spread. Without objection, it was so ordered. O God, help us to recover our hope for our childrens sake. Without objection, the Senate recessed at 10:52 a.m. After Recess Joint Session in the House Speaker Porter called the House to order and in accordance with Uniform Rule 51 turned the gavel over to President Pearce, who called the Joint Session to order at 11:05 a.m. The purpose of the Joint Session was to hear an address by the Honorable Warren Matthews, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The roll of the Senate was called and showed ten members present. Senator Ward was excused from a call. Senator Taylor was absent because of illness. Senators Adams, Donley, Green, Halford, Pete Kelly, Miller, Phillips, Torgerson were absent. Representative Green moved and asked unanimous consent that the roll call of the House be waived and all members be shown as present. Without objection, it was so ordered. President Pearce appointed Representative Green and Senator Parnell to escort Chief Justice Warren Matthews to the Joint Session. The Senate Sergeant at Arms, Ian Fisk, announced Chief Justice Matthews entrance to the House Chamber. The Honorable Warren Matthews was escorted to the rostrum and introduced by President Pearce. The presence of Senators Pete Kelly, Phillips was noted. 1999-03-05 Senate Journal Page 0426 Chief Justice Matthews delivered his address. This address appears in House and Senate Joint Journal Supplement No.6. Chief Justice Matthews introduced Alaska Supreme Court Justice Walter L. Carpeneti. Chief Justice Matthews received a standing ovation and was escorted from the chamber by Senator Parnell and Representative Green. Senator Mackie moved and asked unanimous consent that the Joint Session stand in adjournment. Without objection, President Pearce adjourned the Joint Session at 11:49 a.m. After Recess In the Senate The Senate reconvened at 11:54 a.m. The presence of Senators Adams, Torgerson was noted.
