The prayer was offered by the Chaplain, Pastor David Horn of the Faith Lutheran Church. Senator Hoffman moved and asked unanimous consent that the prayer be spread. Without objection, it was so ordered. Help, Lord, for the godly are no more; the faithful have vanished from among men. Everyone lies to his neighbor; their flattering lips speak with deception. May the Lord remove all flattering lips and every boastful tongue that says, We will triumph with our tongues; we own our lips--who is our master? Because of the oppression of the weak and the groaning of the needy, I will now arise, says the Lord. I will protect them from those who malign them. And the words of the Lord are flawless, like silver refined in the furnace of clay, purified seven times. O Lord, You will keep us safe and protect us from such people forever. The wicked freely strut about when what is vile is honored among men. Psalm 12:1-8 O Lord God, King of the Universe, just as there were many more faithful and true in Davids time than he imagined, so today there are many more who call upon Your Name than there appear to be. But, as in Davids day, so now there are too many who make their own rules, not to be more helpful, but for selfish gain, and so there are too many lies, too much flattery, too much boastfulness; and the weak are oppressed and the needy made to groan. So, arise now in us, we pray, and make our hearts true, that we might honor, not 511 1997-02-26 Senate Journal Page 0512 what is vile to You, but that which enacts and displays Your deep and abiding love and faithfulness to all people. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. In the Name of Jesus. Amen. Senator Mackie led the Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance.
