Senators Kelly, Ward were excused from a call of the Senate. The prayer was offered by the Chaplain, Reverend Wayne Coggins of the Cornerstone Family Ministries. Senator Phillips moved and asked unanimous consent that the prayer be spread. Without objection, it was so ordered. Heavenly Father: I thank You Lord, for the blessing of being able to be with these Senators and leading them in prayer for this past week. Theirs is a very difficult job and again, I ask that You would give them wisdom and courage as they strive to be the leaders they have been called upon to be. Being in Juneau during the legislative session often reminds me of watching the tide change on Turnagain Arm when the rush of the incoming tide collides with the outgoing, creating a churning, foaming, chaotic scene. Add to that a howling wind that stands the waves up and blows their tops off, and it then reminds me of Juneau...where the conflicting tides of public opinion collide and the high winds of various groups focus on trying to blow a decision their direction. 243 1997-02-06 Senate Journal Page 0244 The difference is this: on Turnagain Arm, any sailor with savvy stays in the harbor until the winds and tide calm down. In Juneau, however, these men and women must keep their bearings and navigate the State of Alaska into the future, regardless of the wind and tide. Our prayer today, Lord, is that You would grant them not just the ability to stay afloat, but the skill to steer a clear and safe course for the people of Alaska. Amen. Senator Adams led the Senate in the pledge of allegiance. CERTIFICATION Senator Taylor moved and asked unanimous consent that the journal for the twenty-fourth legislative day be approved as certified by the Secretary. Without objection, it was so ordered.
