Senators Ellis, Lincoln were excused from a call of the Senate. The prayer was offered by the Chaplain, The Reverend Ellen Younker of the Aldersgate United Methodist Church. Senator Duncan moved and asked unanimous consent that the prayer be spread. Without objection, it was so ordered. O, Creator of Day and Night, often, we, Your people, search for light, but find dark, stumble for brightness, but walk in gloom, grope for certainty, but discover confusion. O, Sun of Righteousness, pierce our broken shadows with abundant brightness, our scary dusk with starry radiance, our gloomy clouds with the glow of day, that we, who search for truth, may find it. O Radiancy, Divine, help us to hurl against the long winter, words of hope and progress, and by Your beaming wisdom cause there to shine: justice, instead of oppression, clarity, instead of disorder, unity, instead of dissension. And in the words of the poet: Dark and cheerless is the morn unaccompanied by Thee; joyless is the day's return, till Thy mercy's beams we see; till they inward light impart, cheer our eyes and warm our heart. (Charles Wesley, 1740) Amen. 99 1997-01-21 Senate Journal Page 0100 Senator Parnell led the Senate in the pledge of allegiance.
