Representative Mackie had been previously excused from a call of the House today. Representatives Grussendorf and Navarre arrived before the joint session. The invocation was offered by the Chaplain, Pastor Chris Grube of the Church of the Nazarene. Representative Martin moved and asked unanimous consent that the invocation be spread on the journal. There being no objection, it appears below: "Our Father, save this moment from being merely a gesture to custom or ceremony, and make it a real experience for each one of us in this place, as we call upon You for help and for guidance! We have felt You ever so close to us in times of worship; make us now to feel Your presence in the business of the day - the Unseen Delegate, present and voting. Vote through these men and women that what they say and what they try to do may be in harmony with Your will for this land that we love so much. Lord Your word says, `When we stand praying, forgive, if we have fought against anyone.' Give us the grace to lay aside all bitterness or resentment we may be cultivating in our hearts, lest their acid eat into our peace and corrode our spirit. 1 1994-01-13 House Journal Page 2048 You have said, Lord, `It is more blessed to give than to receive.' Give us grace today to think not of what we can get but of what we can give, that a new spirit may come into our work, with a new vision and a new purpose. We ask these things in the matchless name of Jesus. Amen!" The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Representative B.Davis.
