01 Dedicating a committee room in the Thomas B. Stewart Legislative Office Building to former                              
02 Senator William Beltz.

04 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE:                                                                                         
05      WHEREAS, during his years of service to the state, Senator William Beltz set a                                 
06 standard for strong leadership and dedicated service; and                                                               
07      WHEREAS the standard established by Senator Beltz serves as a reminder and a goal                                
08 for the state's public servants in striving to achieve the best Alaska for Alaskans; and                                
09      WHEREAS the exemplary accomplishments of Senator Beltz remain keenly felt and                                    
10 fondly remembered in the Senate and by the members of the Senate; and                                                   
11      WHEREAS, in 1979, the Senate dedicated a Senate committee room to Senator Beltz;                                 
12 and                                                                                                                     
13      WHEREAS the William Beltz Committee Room in the Capitol has been converted to                                    
14 other uses; and                                                                                                         
15      WHEREAS a new Senate committee room has been constructed in the Thomas B.                                        
16 Stewart Legislative Office Building;                                                                                    
17      BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate dedicates a new, larger, and more suitable                                        

01 committee room in the Thomas B. Stewart Legislative Office Building to Senator William                                
02 Beltz; and be it                                                                                                        
03      FURTHER RESOLVED that the plaque honoring Senator William Beltz that was                                         
04 installed in the William Beltz Committee Room in the Capitol be relocated to the new                                    
05 William Beltz Committee Room in the Thomas B. Stewart Legislative Office Building, so                                   
06 that the following inscription can continue in his memory:                                                              
07                              THE WILLIAM BELTZ COMMITTEE ROOM                                                           
08      The William Beltz Committee Room memorializes the dedication of William                                            
09      Beltz in serving the Territory and State of Alaska. William Beltz was born in                                      
10      Bear Creek, Alaska, in 1912. He served in the territorial House of                                                 
11      Representatives from 1949 to 1950, in the territorial Senate from 1951 to 1958,                                    
12      and in the state Senate from 1959 to 1960, where he served as the first                                            
13      President of the state Senate. He was a carpenter and, in 1955, was elected                                        
14      President of the Alaska Council of Carpenters. A Native Alaskan, he felt a                                         
15      need for formal educational institutions in rural areas of Alaska. In recognition                                  
16      of his efforts to promote education in the state, a regional high school in Nome,                                  
17      the first of its kind in northern Alaska, was named the William E. Beltz High                                      
18      School.                                                                                                            
19      A COPY of this resolution shall be sent to the family of the Honorable                                           
20 William Beltz, former Alaska state senator.
