01 "An Act relating to compulsory school attendance; and providing for an effective date."                                 
02 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA:                                                                
03    * Section 1. AS 14.30.010(a) is amended to read:                                                                 
04            (a)  Every child between seven and 18 [16] years of age shall attend school at                           
05       the public school in the district in which the child resides during each school term.                             
06       Every parent, guardian or other person having the responsibility for or control of a                              
07       child between seven and 18 [16] years of age shall maintain the child in attendance at                        
08       a public school in the district in which the child resides during the entire school term,                         
09       except as provided in (b) of this section.                                                                        
10    * Sec. 2. The uncodified law of the State of Alaska is amended by adding a new section to                          
11 read:                                                                                                                   
12       APPLICABILITY. The changes made to AS 14.30.010(a) by sec. 1 of this Act do not                                   
13 apply to children who are 16 or 17 years of age who have been officially dropped from public                            
14 school enrollment in the state on or before the effective date of this Act.                                             
15    * Sec. 3. This Act takes effect July 1, 2009.
