00 HOUSE BILL NO. 275 01 "An Act relating to tires with retractable studs." 02 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 03 * Section 1. AS 28.35.155(b) is amended to read: 04 (b) In this section, "studded tire" means a tire with metal studs or spikes 05 imbedded in the periphery of the tire surface, and protruding, or capable of 06 protruding, not more than one-fourth inch from the tire surface. 07 * Sec. 2. AS 28.35.155 is amended by adding a new subsection to read: 08 (c) Notwithstanding (a) of this section, a person may operate a vehicle with 09 studded tires at any time if the studs or spikes are retractable and the studs or spikes 10 are retracted and are not in contact with the road surface during the period from 11 (1) May 1 through September 15, inclusive, north of 60 North 12 Latitude; 13 (2) April 15 through September 30, inclusive, south of 60 North 14 Latitude; and 15 (3) May 1 through September 15, inclusive, on a paved portion of the

AS 43.98.025(b) is amended to read: 03 (b) In addition to the fee imposed under (a) of this section, a fee of $5 a tire is 04 imposed on the retail sale in the state on or after July 1, 2004, of tires for motor 05 vehicles designed for use on a highway that are studded with metal studs or spikes 06 weighing more than 1.1 grams each embedded in the periphery of the tire surface and 07 protruding, or capable of protruding, beyond the tread surface of the tire, or on the 08 installation in the state on or after July 1, 2004, for a fee of metal studs or spikes 09 weighing more than 1.1 grams each on a tire for a motor vehicle designed for use on a 10 highway.
