00HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 18 01 Relating to establishment of a fishing community at Adak. 02 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 03 WHEREAS the tensions of the "Cold War" have subsided and numerous military 04 installations are being totally or partially closed by the Department of Defense; and 05 WHEREAS the Adak Naval Base has all of the facilities and infrastructure of a small 06 city; and 07 WHEREAS, with the reductions currently in progress at the Adak Naval Base, many 08 of the facilities on the base will be excess to the needs of the military; and 09 WHEREAS Adak Island has a number of natural harbors in close proximity to major 10 fishery resources; and 11 WHEREAS the opportunity exists to develop a "state of the art" model fishing 12 community on Adak Island; and 13 WHEREAS history has shown that military bases and civilian communities can co-exist with benefits to both; 14 BE IT RESOLVED that the Alaska State Legislature respectfully requests the

01 Department of Defense and the Department of the Navy to release a portion of the Adak 02 Island Naval Reserve to the State of Alaska for the development of a model fishing 03 community on Adak Island. 04 COPIES of this resolution shall be sent to the Honorable Bill Clinton, President of the 05 United States; the Honorable Al Gore, Vice-President of the United States and President of 06 the U.S. Senate; the Honorable Les Aspin, Secretary of the Department of Defense; and to the 07 Honorable Ted Stevens and the Honorable Frank Murkowski, U.S. Senators, and the 08 Honorable Don Young, U.S. Representative, members of the Alaska delegation in Congress.
