STATEMENT :As a Freshman legislator, I shepherded two important pieces of legislation across the finish line. The first requires that all people released from prison have a valid photo ID. This enables these folks to gain meaningful employment and adequate housing. The second requires that all points-of-sale of alcohol post a warning that alcohol can cause cancer, including colon and breast cancers. I believe everyone is entitled to a home they can afford and a financially stable future. My office hosted a town hall for renters and one for mobile home owners, two groups often marginalized in this discussion. I will continue working to incentivize new home construction, transitioning short-term rentals to long-term rentals, and making major infrastructure improvements to our mobile home parks. From protecting foster children from unnecessary psychiatric facility admission to raising the age of consent from 16 to 18, I will continue to make Alaska safer for all our children. I will always advocate for increased education funding and a return to a defined benefit retirement system for all our state workers, including our teachers. During my first term in the State House, I co-chaired the Freshman Caucus, a diverse group of new legislators including Republicans, Democrats, and Independents. We avoided partisan disagreement to tackle big problems: the pending natural gas crisis, increased investment in renewable energy, and the rapid rise in unregulated artificial intelligence. The friendships established through this group will continue and together we can cooperatively move Alaska forward.
